In the fall of 2009, SKWC launched a pilot project with the Nevada State Health Division to address safe sleep issues and SIDS prevention in Nevada. In January 2010, SKWC became the lead agency in Nevada for the Cribs for Kids® program, a national safe-sleep education program for families. The C4K® program believes every family deserves to receive clear, consistent, repetitive, and culturally appropriate information regarding a safe-sleep environment for their baby.
In the 2nd quarter of this 2013-2014 Fiscal Year C4K was awarded an In Kind Donation from the Nevada Division of Public and Behavioral Health, Bureau of Child and Family, & Community Wellness in the total amount of $48,140.00 providing; 220 Survival Kits = $19,140 shipped statewide to Washoe County, Elko, Las Vegas, Carson City, and Fallon. $25,000.00 to promote a Public Awareness Campaign by means of multimedia approach utilizing digital media messaging and rural radio station through PSAs, and $4,000.00 for C4K statewide brochures both in English and Spanish.
Safe Kids Washoe County C4K program is one of 40 community organizations across the US to receive $2,500 matching funds grant from a Joseph A. Hardy, Sr. Mini-Grant Program sponsored by 84 Lumber Company, provided by Cribs for Kids national. Providing 75 survival kits to partners in the state of Nevada.
Lastly, C4K is working on a public outreach campaign totaling $14,950 through a grant funded by Child Death Review Executive Committee for bus tails and Jack panels in both Washoe and Clark County.
Our Train-the-Trainer program has proven to be successful in educating more than 350 individuals statewide. As of April 2013, 46 Community Based Organizations participate as partners in the Cribs for Kids Program. Statewide more than 500 babies are now sleeping safely from the contribution of our wonderful sponsors and supporters.
