In less than a minute, unattended children can get out of their car seats and into danger. Even a small change in routine or just “running in” to a convenience store can have dire consequences.
Since 2000, more than 1,000 children have died in cars in non-traffic accidents such as:
BACKOVERS – A driver cannot see the rear bumper of thier car when sitting in the driver’s seat. Many vehicles have a blind zone of 20 to 50 feet.
TEMPERATURE – The temperature inside a car that is parked in the sun can reach more than 130°F in just 15 minutes any time of the year.
POWER ACCESSORIES – Power accessories are designed for adult use but can pose dangerous risks for children.
RUNAWAY VEHICLES – Kids can release parking breaks and take automatic transmissions out of park.
LOCKED IN TRUNK – Car trunks are dark, airtight, and most cannot be opened from the inside.
Reno Sunrise Rotary
The Rotary Club of Reno Sunrise has partnered with Safe Kids Washoe County to bring the Not Even for a Minute campaign to Northern Nevada. The purpose of the campaign is to alert parents and other caregivers not to leave a child unattended in or around a motor vehicle.
